OLD TIMES

October 31, 2016

By Olivene Godfrey

It seems like old times....  I'm in the den which adjoins the patio with the glass door and large windows where I sat, and wrote my first blogs, before I moved to the combination sitting room and bedroom at the other end of our house.  The reason I'm in here is because Barry is installing black out curtains in my bedroom/sitting room.

The blinds I had let too much of the bright sunshine in and was sending me into a frenzy.  I hope these work as they were expensive and are a lot of trouble for Barry.

The home health nurse says my health is fine now, that I'm over my recent illness, even though I feel bad some days.  I still can't eat a lot of foods.  Barry told me this morning he wanted me to get my "taste" back before Thanksgiving as he doesn't want to cook a big meal just for himself.

When my late husband, Ralph, and I were married, I could only cook a few desserts.  So, we learned to cook together, trial and error.  When Barry was a small child, I started writing freelance and often took him with me on assignments and we would usually be home in time for me to cook supper.  Thanksgiving was always a big meal.  I would start cooking several days before the holiday.

Thanksgiving dinner would be the only dinner Ralph would highly compliment me for.  I said something to him about it once.  He said, "When a meal is good, you should know it or I'd tell you".  He was a man of few words.  After he died August 20, 2002 I was exhausted from caring for him, so Barry started cooking the Thanksgiving day dinner.

Every year he has improved and cooked a better dinner.  I am praying that I'll feel better by then.

Barry got the curtains installed and seem to be working fine.  He keeps opening the curtains.  I complain and he says, "It's like a dark hole in here, I like the sunshine"!  I tell him I'm sensitive to light now.  I don't know why but it sends me up the wall!

See you next time.  Comments welcome.  (Edited and typed by Tam.)
